| Tipu Sultan - the ancient missile man of India |

I have always admired Dr APJ Abdul Kalam for his selfless and extraordinary devotion to the Indian space program, and to satisfy my itch to learn more about him, I picked up his autobiography - "Wings of Fire". I enjoyed all the events and incidents narrated by him, but one incident almost swept me off my feet and made me all the more proud on Indian science. Not the twentieth century science, but something from an old era.
Dr Kalam was on his training missions to USA when he noticed a painting in the lobby of NASA's flight facility at Wallop island, Virginia. It depicted Tipu's army launching rockets at the Britishers !! Tipu Sultan had perfected the rocket's use for military purposes and used it effectively against the Britishers. After his death, Britishers seized his rockets and took them to London for re-engineering.
After doing a bit of googling I found out Tipu's contribution to Rocket technology is acknowledged all over the world. At the Woolwhich museum London, one of his rockets is still preserved with the name "India's War Rocket".

Last Saturday, I got my first saxophone. I have been eyeing to get one for me since long and when Shruthi Musicals of Chennai informed me, they have one, I could not stop myself going all the way to Chennai and buy it. It did cost me a dear but with its rich and romantic tone, coupled with the sexy looks, I guess it is worth it. |
